While the majority of America is staying at home, there are bound to be times when people must leave to gather essentials. These necessary interactions may inadvertently expose you to unwanted disease, and subsequently, bring germs with you back home. Here at PoweredByPros, we are dedicated to helping our community stay safe and healthy. That’s why we created this article; to supply homeowners with fact-based tips and important information to help keep their residences coronavirus-free. Continue reading to learn which products kill Covid-19 and how you can use them to properly disinfect your home.

BackgroundThe Importance of Regular Household Cleaning

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the most likely way the novel coronavirus is transmitted is via person-to-person, hence the importance of social distancing. While transmission via respiratory droplets is the most common way of catching Covid-19, there is growing evidence that this pneumonia-like disease could live on a variety of surfaces for days. For this reason, cleaning of dirty and potentially contaminated surfaces is among the best practices homeowners can take to prevent transmission of this deadly virus.

Coronaviruses are a class of viruses commonly found throughout the world. They are not hardy and can die relatively easily. In fact, the EPA says that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill and Covid-19 can be safely exterminated with proper cleaning materials.

more about CoronavirusesDestroying the Virus:

Along with most viruses, covid-19 has an outer coating that is meant to protect the genetic material (RNA) inside. The surrounding envelope allows the virus to merge with other nearby cells, causing healthy cells to become infected. Destroying a virus’ protein coating typically kills it. By utilizing disinfectants, you can destroy the outer membrane that protects the coronavirus’ RNA (the stuff that actually causes disease), therefore, making it incapable of transmitting infection.

EPA APPROVED DISINFECTANTSTHE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLEANING AND DISINFECTING

Cleaning with soap (or detergent) and water removes germs, dirt, and other impurities—but it might not necessarily get rid of every single germ. Cleaning plays an important part in lowering germ count and the risk of spreading infection. On the other hand, disinfecting is the process of using chemicals to actually kill germs on surfaces or objects. A combination of cleaning and disinfecting will dramatically lower the capability for viruses and germs to survive on household surfaces. To be certain that you are killing germs, homeowners must use EPA-registered disinfectants, some of which can be found below.

MethodsCleaning Products that Kill Covid-19

In addition to the common supplies found above, a full list of disinfectants that can safely exterminate Covid-19 can be found at the EPA’s website

The primary germ-killing ingredients found in the approved list typically contain alcohol (of at least 70% strength) and/or bleach. As many of you know, there is an extreme shortage of these easy-to-use cleaning supplies, i.e. clorox wipes. Luckily, some other household cleaning supplies can be effective in killing the novel coronavirus—and are much easier to find.

According to Dr. Richard Sachleben, an organic chemist from the American Chemical Society who was recently interviewed by NBC, “Many common household cleaning products can kill the coronavirus if you use them properly.”

Option #1Soap & Water

This combination has been keeping homes clean and saving lives for decades. Most ‘soaps’ have disinfectants that can kill covid-19, if you clean the right way. Try and use warm water and soap together. Utilizing a clean towel, “Scrub like you’ve got sticky stuff on the surface and you really need to get it off,” says Dr. Sachleben. Make sure to discard the towel or leave it in a clean, hot and soapy bucket for a long period of time.

Option #2Bleach Solution

Household Bleach (at least 5 percent strength) is extremely effective at killing COVID-19, along with almost every other bacteria, virus, and fungus on Earth. The only downside is that bleach can be difficult to work with, it’s so corrosive that it may damage certain materials. When using bleach, be sure to always wear gloves and allow for adequate ventilation where you are cleaning. NEVER MIX BLEACH WITH OTHER PRODUCTS. To make an effective and safe bleach solution, the CDC recommends using 5 tablespoons, or ⅓ cup, of bleach in one gallon of water (or 4 teaspoons in one quart of water). The solution loses its effectiveness in 24 hours, so make a new batch every day. If this is your preferred cleaning method. Be smart when using Bleach. It can corrode metal, strip paint, and harm your skin. For obvious reasons, try and use bleach when the kids aren’t around. Before you clean an entire surface with a bleach solution, test out a small amount on certain materials that you may suspect will become damaged.

Option #3Hyrdrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is another common household cleaning product that has a variety of uses ranging from dental debridging to acting as an antiseptic for minor cuts/burns. The CDC claims that hydrogen peroxide is effective in terminating rhinovirus, the cause of many common colds. Rhinovirus is harder to destroy when compared to covid-19. Hydrogen peroxide can break down rhinovirus in about 8 minutes, so it is safe to assume coronaviruses will most likely die quicker. In fact, whole towns in Italy are being sprayed with this disinfectant. Pour your preferred amount into a clean and empty spray bottle. Spray hydrogen peroxide on dirty surfaces and let it sit for a few minutes. There is no need to even wipe it down. Hydrogen peroxide will not corrode metals and is less harsh compared to bleach. However, it can discolor clothing and fabrics, such as carpet.

Option #4Isopropyl Alcohol

Last but not least, alcohol solutions with at least 70 percent of isopropyl alcohol can kill coronaviruses on solid surfaces. Do not mix rubbing alcohol with other liquids. First, it is important to clean your surfaces with water and detergent thoroughly. Then, put your rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle and apply it to your desired surface. Let it sit for a minute. Alcohol is safe for most surfaces but can discolor some plastics. This is, in my personal opinion, the easiest option to rid of COVID.

Proper Technique: Just a swipe isn’t enoughRegularly Clean High-Contact & Touched Surfaces

Make sure to follow cleaning instructions as directed on the products label/container. To decontaminate a surface, you can’t just wipe once and expect every germ to disappear. Really scrub it until the entire surface is wet and let it dry on its own. For example, clorox wipes need a few minutes to dry. When in doubt, leave cleaning and disinfectant products on your surfaces for as long as possible to allow adequate time for sanitizing agents to work their magic.

All homes and lifestyles are different. Regardless of how you live, there are commonly used objects and things around the house that everyone comes into physical contact with on a daily basis. Most touched in-home items include: tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, light switches, phones, tablets, touch screens, remote controls, keyboards, handles, desks, toilets, sinks, cooking items, and stove switches.
