When to Replace Your Windows and Doors

Architecture, wide veranda of a modern house, exterior

The average life span of the typical home window is about 15 to 20 years.  It’s not just the age of your windows that will determine if they need replacing.  Your front door on the other hand may last about 30 years. However, the weather stripping, gaskets and other parts may need to be replaced every 8 years or so.

Here are some signs to look for when determining if you will need to replace your windows.

  1. You are having a hard time opening or closing your windows. There is a device in your window called a balance. When this no longer works your windows can cause a potential danger as the balance is what keeps your window from falling down after you open it. Additionally, if your windows are painted or nailed shut other hazards arise as you will not be able to utilize them in the event of an emergency such as a fire.
  2. You see light seeping in at the sill or around the casing. Where you see light coming in is where other things such as insects, drafts, and water can come in. If you are seeing gaps it is time to consider new windows.
  3. Condensation between the window panes.  Windows that are double or triple paned are designed with a layer of air between the panes for insulation. Seeing condensation between your window panes is a sign that the insulation is not working as it should.
  4. High energy bills.  Windows and doors that are inefficient can cause your energy bills to climb. By upgrading to a more energy efficient window you will see a savings on your energy bill and the windows can eventually pay for themselves.
  5. Having a draft run through your house.  If you have hot or cold air coming in through your windows and doors that is a sign that you have a problem. A temporary fix can be to change the seals around your doors and windows but, that may be a temporary fix. If it is an ongoing problem then it is time to seriously consider new doors and windows.
